Call for Proposals – Winter Island Artist Project Residency 2020
About Winter Islands 2020
Artscape Gibraltar Point is seeking project proposals from artists working in all media for the Winter Islands Artist-In-Residence program for 2020.
Now in its fifth year, Winter Island is a unique, juried artist-in-residence program aimed at emerging, mid-career, and established artists working in community engaged practice, and hosted at Artscape Gibraltar Point, an artist residency located on the picturesque Toronto Islands.
The aim of the Winter Island program is to recognize four artists annually who have demonstrated a strong and unique artistic voice while working in Canada’s visual arts community and provide them with a month of distraction-free studio time to create and/or develop a new and exciting work, or body of work that seeks to engage with and/or activate the artist community at Artscape Gibraltar Point and the Toronto Islands.
Selected artists will have the opportunity to present these works/projects to the public as a part of a Winter Island Group Exhibition to take place at the conclusion of the residency series at Artscape Youngplace Galleries in Summer 2020.

Proposal Considerations and Submission Criteria
The residency competition is open to artists working in all media, however some practices are better suited to Artscape Gibraltar Point’s facilities than others. Examples of practices that would be unsuitable would be heavy metal-smithing and casting, advanced carpentry and wood working practices (beyond simple non-electrical tools), ceramics and clay work (we don’t have a kiln!), practices which involve work with toxic or hazardous materials, noxious agents (excluding painting practices), and/or infectious biological materials. If you have questions about the suitability of your proposal, please contact Artscape Gibraltar Point.
The Jury and Programming Committee for Winter Island 2018 will be comprised of former Winter Island participants, Artscape Gibraltar Point long term tenants, island community members and Artscape staff. The jury will be announced following the notification of the selected artists.
Applicants will be notified of the
results of their application electronically and/or by telephone prior to the
announcement of the selected artists on November
Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement of participation and residency contract that will outline further expectations toward the artist including, but not limited to, residency and project promotion and agreement to Artscape Gibraltar Point’s policies on resident conduct.
