Call for Proposals – Winter Island Artist Residency 2018

Artscape Gibraltar Point is seeking project proposals from artists working in all media for the Winter Island Artist-In-Residence program for 2018.

Now in its third year, Winter Island is a unique, juried,  artist-in-residence program aimed at emerging, mid-career and, established artists, hosted at Artscape Gibraltar Point, an artist residency located on the picturesque Toronto Islands.

Winter Island recognizes four artists annually who have demonstrated a strong and unique artistic voice while working in Canada’s visual arts community and provides them with a month of distraction-free studio time to create and/or develop a new and exciting work, or body of work that seeks to engage with and/or activate the artist community at Artscape Gibraltar Point and the Toronto Islands.

Selected artists will have the opportunity to present these works/projects to the public as a part of a Winter Island Group Exhibition to take place at the conclusion of the residency series at Artscape Youngplace Hallway Galleries, Vitrines and, select Flex studios, in late May/Early June 2018.

Selected Artists Will Receive

a complimentary month long stay at Artscape Gibraltar Point including a private studio and bedroom
ferry tickets (to a maximum of 8 round trips)
a $100/wk food or materials stipend
promotion of their residency and project via press release
promotion of their residency and project via Artscape’s social media channels
opportunity to participate in the communal life of Artscape Gibraltar Point and engage with participants in our self-directed residency and long-term studio rental programs

January 2, 2018 – First Winter Island Artist Residency Begins

March 5, 2018 – Third Winter Island Artist Residency Begins
April 2, 2018 – Final Winter Island Artist Residency Begins
May 20 – June 2, 2018 – Winter Island Artist Residency Exhibition at Artscape Youngplace

Expectations Toward the Artists

Artists will be expected to create a work, or body of work, in the medium or discipline of their choice that seeks to activate and/or otherwise engage the artist community at Artscape Gibraltar Point and the Toronto Islands. Further to this, they will be expected to offer studio visits and present an artist talk about their practice during their time at Artscape Gibraltar Point.The Winter Island Artist-In-Residence program will take place concurrently with our self-directed residency program. As such, selected artists are also be expected to be an active and visible member of the Artscape Gibraltar Point community, and to contribute to our communal atmosphere in a pleasant and positive manner.

 

Artist Selection Criteria

To be considered for the Winter Island Art-In-Residence program, artists should meet in full or in large part, the following criteria:

a demonstrable professional artistic practice
a demonstrable exhibition record including at least one solo exhibition and/or significant exhibition record at a combination of the local, regional and/or national level
be able to provide a one paragraph artist biography and description of their proposed project,
be able to provide, on acceptance, two high quality images of their work and a headshot for promotional purposes
have had their work as a subject of at least one professional, critical review in a recognized journal or publication
the feasibility and artistic merit of their proposal
be a Canadian artist or artist legally working in Canada
be able to participate fully in all aspects of the Winter Island Artist-In-Residence Program

Proposal Considerations & Submission Criteria

The residency competition is open to artists working in all media, however some practices are better suited to Artscape Gibraltar Point’s facilities than others. Examples of practices that would be unsuitable would be heavy metal-smithing and casting, advanced carpentry and wood working practices (beyond simple non-electrical tools), ceramics and clay work (we don’t have a kiln!), practices which involve work with toxic or hazardous materials, noxious agents (excluding painting practices), and/or infectious biological materials. Notification Process

Applicants will be notified of the results of their application electronically and/or by telephone prior to the announcement of the selected artists on November 15, 2017.

Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement of participation and residency contract that will outline further expectations toward the artist including, but not limited to, residency and project promotion and agreement to Artscape Gibraltar Point’s policies on resident conduct.Please note that all decisions of the jury are final.

Jurors’ Prerogative

One space in the program will be reserved for an emerging artist who may or may not possess all of the above listed criteria. The awarding of this position will be at the sole discretion of the jury. Jurors reserve the right to exclude or disqualify applications that are incomplete or do not meet the selection criteria. Jurors will abide by Artscape’s values of diversity and inclusiveness in their selection process and will be expected to recuse themselves in cases of actual or perceived conflict of interest. Jury decisions are final.

 Jury Composition

The Jury and Programming Committee for Winter Island 2018 will be comprised of former Winter Island participants, Artscape Gibrlatar Point long term tenants, island community members and Artscape Staff. The jury will be announced following the notification of the selected artists.
